I’ve been meaning for a long time to write about acupuncture for anxiety and stress. But regular readers of my blog will know that I like to write from my heart as well as from my head. And so, when I was recently fortunate enough to spend a few days in peaceful retreat on the island of Iona off the coast of Mull in Scotland, I was able to give the idea some more focused thought. It was a much needed opportunity to stop, take stock, be still, renew and refresh my body, mind and spirit after a few years of almost relentless stress, change, loss and worry in my personal life. It was really brought home to me, on returning to ‘normal’ life, just how valuable it was to let myself be in another mode for a while.
So much of my professional life, offering acupuncture and Zero Balancing, is spent working with people who desperately need the opportunity to have their own mini-retreats in the midsts of their stress-filled lives. It is quite extraordinary how much of a general belief it is that acupuncture is really only for “bad backs, giving up smoking and losing weight”. People I talk to often seem surprised, bemused even, to hear that the majority of my patients come to me seeking help for anxiety and stress. “I didn’t know that acupuncture could help with that!”, they say – and then want to know more.
Because to a greater or lesser degree, we are all stressed – or are living with the after-effects of stress at some point in our past. So many people’s distressing physical symptoms are described as “stress-related” by their GPs, and when that happens it can be hard to know quite what to do next. That’s where I can come in, offering supportive and potentially extraordinarily effective acupuncture for anxiety – whether it is manifesting as palpitations, insomnia, panic attacks, mental and physical agitation, overthinking & worry, sweats, health fears, or a whole host of other things; and the wonderful bodywork of Zero Balancing as a way of quietening the cacophony of mental chatter that can so disrupt our wellbeing.
Now you might think that “acupuncture anxiety” might itself be a problem for some, but in reality – and counter-intuitive though this may seem – a few well-chosen needles left in while you lie down quietly can be so profoundly relaxing that I have known clients to rush into my treatment room and be lying down within seconds! In addition to the calming effect of the acupuncture in the moment, my job is to identify those parts of a person that most need support, strengthening or settling so that the positive benefits last for days, weeks, even months. Just the other day, a lady who came to me a couple of years ago almost besides herself with anxiety after a traumatic pregnancy and childbirth, and who had moved away, sent me a text saying “Thank you so much for everything, and for giving me the confidence to give acupuncture a go. It’s changed my life!” How wonderful to get such feedback that acupuncture for stress, acupuncture for anxiety, can truly make such a difference in someone’s life!
I am a very good listener, and I will always take you seriously whatever is going on in your life to make you anxious and stressed.
