One thing all women (and girls from puberty) know about is the role of hormones in their lives. Whether it’s simply the monthly adjustment needed around menstruation; or the controlling of their periods with the Pill; or the mood changes associated with Pre-Menstrual Tension (PMS/PMT); or the concerns around avoiding pregnancy; or the hopes around achieving pregnancy; or the ailments that come before, during or after the period; or the mixed feelings over the periods coming to an end; or … or … or …
Well, you get the picture. On some level, whether consciously or unconsciously, a woman’s hormonal balance or hormonal imbalance is governing her life – sometimes silently, sometimes very very noisily.
So, let’s just take a look at some of the things associated with this that can potentially be helped through acupuncture:
Acupuncture for Period Pain
Many women suffer badly, every month, from painful periods – sometimes because they have conditions like endometriosis, sometimes just because that’s the way they’ve always been. But there is a huge potential for acupuncture to be of benefit here. There is no reason why you should have to assume that painful, heavy, clotty periods are your lot – the underlying reasons for your distress and discomfort often make complete sense to my acupuncturist understanding, and there’s so much that we can try. My clinic is full of women who, after an initial phase of weekly treatments, settle down to coming once a month in the build-up to their next period – and for many, the monthly writing-off of a few days because of debilitating pain has simply become a thing of the past.
So if you’re looking for period pain remedies, look no further than acupuncture and see if you can become one of those many women I’m talking about.
Acupuncture for normalising periods – heaviness, menstrual cycle length, type of flow
As with painful periods, many women come to me because their periods are either excessively heavy, so light as to be scarcely there (often of concern if they are trying to conceive), unpredictably irregular and so on.
Whatever your issue, acupuncture treatment has so often allowed the development of a much more ‘normal’ menstrual cycle, more regular, more predictable, more comfortable.
Acupuncture for PMT/PMS
And last, but very definitely not least, there are few women who have never experienced the mood swings and physical discomfort of pre-menstrual symptoms. Anger (literally ‘seeing red’) and/or weepiness in the build-up to a period, while often a perfectly understandable ‘ brakes off’ expression of emotions in response to triggers that, at other times of the month, can be navigated past more smoothly, can become extreme and unmanageable. And if you also feel bloated, get headaches or migraines, and have distressing breast tenderness – well, it’s obvious that exploring how to treat hormonal imbalance in a natural way is going to come as a very welcome relief.
Because acupuncture is such a brilliant way of looking at health issues which straddle the physical, mental and emotional, it’s hardly surprising, is it, that periods, hormones, and pre-menstrual symptoms should step forward and say “Treat me!”, is it?
If any of this strikes a chord with you, and you are looking for a way to feel better and more balanced each month, please call me on 07970 295177, and in a few months you may hardly recognise yourself!
