Teaching Zero Balancing is as much a revelation as learning it for the first time. There is something profoundly humbling about seeing material that is deeply familiar through the beginner’s eyes. And in Zero Balancing, our focus is on bones and the skeleton. None of that spooky, scary Halloween stuff; nor the sad, scary stuff associated with death. I’m talking about bones as the most vibrant living tissue, our core structure that gives us strength, protection and flexibility. Do you know that bones bend? Do you know that an electrical charge will move through bone? Do you know that we grow bone where we need it, in response to what we do with our bodies?
As I said to my students last weekend, I love watching archaeology programmes on the TV – and I particularly love it when they find a skeleton and bring in an osteoarchaeologist to examine the bones. They can tell so much from what they see. They say things like “This was a man of about 30, he badly broke his leg about five years before he died – he must have had a severe limp”. Or “This man did heavy physical work all his life”. Or “This woman had TB”. Amazing.
Because Zero Balancing pays attention to what is, rather than sets out to fix things, having a ZB session allows the client’s bones to speak to them, to tell their story – often going back into their early childhood. Don’t ask me how that works, but by tension in the bone being held respectfully, something shifts. A memory, a sense of the environment one grew up in, an understanding of ourselves on a different level.
Zero Balancing clients come for all sorts of reasons – physical pain relief, emotional trauma (old or new), navigating through times of stress, even simply to feel good in themselves. It doesn’t matter what the trigger to have ZB is, the beauty of it for me is that everyone’s bones deserve attention – and that people LOVE having their bones touched!
