I think meditating is a wonderful thing. In the ideal world I’d meditate every day, and would make it a priority in my life. I’d tap in to a source of peaceful inner contemplation and my state of mind would most likely be calmer, more settled and better able to cope.
And by meditation I don’t mean doing a prescribed spiritual practice, requiring any faith or belief system. I mean finding a way to settle the mind by simplifying what it focuses on, and to gain mental / emotional refreshment from doing so.
But without setting my alarm clock even earlier than I already to, I just don’t fit a regular meditation of any length into my day. But I do meditate, and I notice myself doing so more and more. So what’s going on here – I don’t meditate, yet I do …?
Well, try this … notice something around you, as I did today – a foxglove flower, an old stone wall near where I parked
– and as you notice, take a moment to really pay attention. Let that micro-pause in your life give you a micro-moment of contemplation. Feel how you feel in your body. Notice that you are breathing. Come back to normal life. That’s it, that’s a moment’s meditation.
Don’t underestimate how valuable such moments can be. Mindfulness is the self-help buzz word at the moment, and this is my way of turning a moment’s mindfulness into an internally experienced feeling. When someone comes to me for acupuncture or Zero Balancing, dealing with stress or life challenges is usually pretty high on their wish list. If you can start to draw upon your own inner strength, your own resources, then you have a self-help tool that no-one can ever take away from you.
