The population seems to be split pretty evenly between those who love the autumn, and those whom it fills with gloom. I’m one of the first group, barely being able to suppress my glee as days get shorter, and the leaves turn and then fall. And I recognise that, for many of the people who come through my door, it stresses them out as they contemplate seemingly endless months of chill and darkness.
So, this short post is designed to inspire you to appreciate the autumn for what it gives us. It’s a turning point in the year, a few weeks when we keenly feel things slowing down and returning to the earth. As the fallen leaves start to rot down on the ground, they are a symbol of how we need to let go of things that no longer serve
us – old grudges, unnecessary or unhelpful emotional tangles, wistfulness about things we never did manage to achieve. Our gutters need a good clear-out, and that means kindly noticing whether there is any negativity or mental toxicity hanging around which we might just be able to shake away before we hibernate for the winter. We never can clean everything out, but as with clutter-clearing a room, even a little bit can make a big difference.
The autumn is, in Chinese philosophy, the peak time of year for grieving – and many of my clients who’ve been bereaved in recent (or not so recent) times report an upsurge of sadness, or a revisiting of the acute sense of loss. They may be waking up before the alarm, or having dreams of their lost loved ones. This is a natural process, and one I encourage people to see as part of their healing. For some, though, the gradual moving on from a bereavement seems to have stalled, holding them back from fully living their lives, and at times like this an autumn acupuncture treatment, or a supportive Zero Balancing session, can be exceptionally valuable.
So, allow yourself to go with the gentle downward flow of the season – and just think, in only a few weeks now, the days will be getting longer again!
