“Positive Enough” Thinking

April 14, 2012

It’s possible to get overwhelmed by all the good advice there is around – we’re supposed to take responsibility for ourselves, our health, our state of mind.  And that’s all true, and a very good idea.  Certainly better than waiting for someone else to sort you out.  That’s why I work alongside my clients, step by step, supporting and encouraging rather than deciding what’s best for you.  Whether you’re battling with depression or anxiety, wanting to change old patterns of thinking and reacting, trying to understand where your migraines or IBS or painful periods are coming from … we’re always told that Positive Thinking is crucial.  But in my experience, when you’re feeling anything but positive, it can become just another burden which is too much to carry – and that can add another level of feeling things are too much.

So my solution?  My bit of ‘good advice’? How about exploring “Positive Enough Thinking” in the same way as aiming to be a “Good Enough Parent or Daughter”?  Every time you catch yourself thinking the cherry blossom looks lovely in the garden, or the sun catching the edge of a cloud lifts your spirits, give yourself a pat on the back because you noticed it.  It might not sound much, but it’s actually a big step in becoming conscious of the good things around you, and the good things inside yourself.

One of the best things I ever did was make a pledge to myself, many years ago, to tell myself – out loud – when I noticed I was feeling happy.  I’d understood that happiness tends to be fleeting, and easily forgotten when less happy things nudge it out of the way.  By saying “At this moment I feel happy”, it is acknowledged and appreciated.  And that’s my kind of Positive Thinking!

Its great to think that after 6 years in Australia I can still “touch base” with the wonderful therapist that put me back on the straight and narrow after I was pretty unwell. I hope you continue to go from strength to strength Rosanna, much love, Fiona x
